Cumbria Parish Councils Directory

Cumbria has well over 250 Parish Councils in total all of whom are recognised as doing good work for their community and for Cumbria.

Town and Parish Councils are an essential part of the structure of local democracy and have a vital role in acting on behalf of the communities they represent.

They:

  • give views, on behalf of the community, on planning applications and other proposals that affect the parish

  • undertake projects and schemes that benefit local residents

  • work in partnership with other bodies to achieve benefits for the parish

  • alert relevant authorities to problems that arise or work that needs to be undertaken

  • help the other tiers of local government keep in touch with their local communities.

Town and Parish Councils have a wide range of legal duties and powers, such as the maintenance of community buildings and land and much more. They have the power to raise money through the local council tax.

There are also many projects taking place events throughout the year, great community projects and working groups that provide inspiration.

Communication across Cumbria is key to good partnership working and effective development of individual and joint projects but in such a rural area this can often prove difficult.  The Cumbria Parish Councils Directory aims to link all Parish Councils in some way and deliver information and above all transparency easily across the area. How useful would it be for all the information from each active Parish Council to be available for all to read ,download and comment upon via a forum.

The Code of recommended practice for local authorities on Data Transparency puts forward the requirement for all Parish Councils to have a web presence. Greater Transparency of public bodies is at the heart of enabling the public to hold politicians and public bodies to account. Where public money is involved there is a fundamental public interest in being able to see how it is being spent, to demonstrate how value for money has been achieved or to highlight inefficiency.

The internet and individual websites are one of the best ways to provide downloadable minutes, agendas, information, promotion of events etc...However building a website with such capabilities can be complicated for the average individual and to have it built for you can prove expensive and time consuming by the time you have bought a domain name and purchased a company to host it.

Cumbria Parish Council Directory aims to solve these problems and offer pages on its website to all Parish Councils, a one stop shop allowing them to record activity and plans under the one umbrella site in an affordable manner.

Each parish council will be able to purchase 5, 10 or 15 pages depending on how much or little you want to put forward to everyone else the packages will range depending on how many pages you decide to have. You will also be able to view everyone else’s information and join a CPCD Forum to keep up on issues across Cumbria in between meetings.
